Dr. Christelle Scharff received funding to attend and present at a workshop on Computer Science for Global Development

Christelle ScharffChristelle Scharff, PhD, participated in the Workshop on Computer Science for Global Development where she delivered a paper on “Mobile Technology for Global Development in Africa: Current and Future Initiatives in Senegal.” The goal of the workshop, which was held in Berkeley, California in August, was to discuss the role of computer science research in addressing the challenges of sustainable global development and to build a community of interested researchers in the field. The Computing Community Consortium, the sponsoring organization, funded her attendance.

Dr. Scharff recently returned from a year’s sabbatical in which she devoted her time to creating a model of teaching mobile application development for social change and for fostering entrepreneurship. She implemented the model at three universities in Senegal, and since then, several other universities in Africa have joined the initiative.
