Mobile Solutions for Smarter Cities Competition

Contestants participating in the recent Mobile Solutions for Smarter Cities competition organized by the Seidenberg Mobile Lab had five weeks to build an application relating to public services like transportation, education, health care, energy and human services and submit a video demo.  A team of five judges declared Palak Shah, MS/CS ’12 the 1st place winner for her Smarter City Ranking application.  Second and 3rd place winners were David Gethers, MS/IT ‘12 and Eric Greene, MS/CS ‘13, respectively. Seidenberg Institute for Computing Innovation Launched

Seidenberg Faculty PhotoEleven Seidenberg faculty members and six faculty from other academic institutions in the area, participated in the first gathering of the Seidenberg Institute for Computing Innovation (SICI) held at the Graduate Center (WP) in mid-May.  Established by Professors Lixin Tao and Li-Chiou Chen, the SICI is a faculty development forum for sharing information and materials on the latest computing technologies and on how to integrate hands-on labs on specific topics into the curriculum.  The event was well received.  Future plans include expanding participation to involve students and Seidenberg alumni as well encouraging interaction on an ongoing basis through the creation of a SICI Web site.

Student Earns IEEE Library Excellence in Research Award

At the urging of Professor Jean Coppola, Marc Kowtko, BS/IT ’15, wrote and submitted “Securing our Nation and Protecting Privacy” for possible presentation at the IEEE – Long Island Systems Applications and Technology Conference scheduled in early May.  Much to his astonishment, the paper was accepted, a rare feat for a college freshman!  In addition, Marc received a Library Excellence in Research Award for his paper, one of several such awards given annually by the Pace University Library. 2nd Annual Community College Programming Contest

Snatching the reins from Orange County Community College, winner of last year’s Annual Community College Programming Contest, Robert Lee and Justin Okamoto of Rockland Community College placed 1st this year by successfully completing six out of nine problems with an overall score of 28. CLOUT Program Receives President’s Award for Excellence

The five members of the CLOUT program’s administrative staff – Lynne Larkin, Faith Faulk, Linda Pennachio, Christina Pocchiari and Marie Iadavaia – were honored for their teamwork with the President’s Award for Excellence at the Employee Recognition Ceremonies held in White Plains on March 18.  The team was recognized for its tireless efforts to preserve the CLOUT program in the face of threatened debilitating cost cuts.
