Seidenberg and AHRC Are Hosting an International Film Festival

As many of you know, one of Seidenberg’s outreach programs works with AHRC of New York City, an organization for helping individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Together, with Pace’s Dean of Students, Dr. Marijo Russell-O’Grady, they will be hosting an International Film Festival in celebration of Individuals with Disabilities in Film.

This is the second annual film festival to be held at Pace for the occasion. According to an official media release for the festival, “the festival focuses on individuals with disabilities expressing dreams and hopes to be contributing members of society like other individuals without disabilities.”

A discussion of the films will be included, featuring distinguished panelists

  • Alice Elliott (Director, Welcome Change Productions)
  • Dr. Marilyn Jaffe-Ruiz (Member, Board of Directors, AHRC New York City)
  • Maria Hodermarska (Parent and Teacher, NYU)
  • Gary Lind (Executive Director, AHRC New York City, Community Engagement Partner with Pace University)
  • Adil Imran Sanai (Self-Advocate)
  • Issac Zablocki (Co-Founder and Director, ReelAbilities: New York Disability Film Festival)
  •  and Dr. Marijo Russel-O’Grady, Dean of Students, who will act as Moderator.

The festival will take place Monday, March 31, 2014, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts, Pace University, 3 Spruce Street, Manhattan, New York City.

Community Service of Seidenberg School Highlighted at Leading Convention in New York

Dr. Jim Lawler presented a keynote presentation and project workshop on Empowering Individual Advocacy through Visual Storytelling Projects at the 63rd Annual Convention of NYSARC, Inc, in Albany, New York, in October 2012. The workshop reviewed projects of self-advocacy that Dr. Lawler and his Seidenberg students do for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities at AHRC New York City by integrating multimedia technologies. This is the fourth consecutive year that Dr. Lawler was invited to this major convention on disabilities in New York State that continues to showcase the technologies of the Seidenberg School.

James Lawler Receives Fourth Consecutive AHRC Grant

Professor James Lawler recently received his fourth consecutive community service grant from the AHRC New York City – Education Services organization. This grant is for “Catching a Dream,” a program in which Pace University students mentor high school students with developmental and intellectual disabilities at the AHRC New York City Middle/High School in Brooklyn, New York. Dyson Student Awarded Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program Scholarship

In appreciation of the mentoring that Pace students in Professor James Lawler’s CIS 102W service learning course do with developmentally and intellectually challenged clients of AHRC NYC, the organization established the Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program Scholarship.

This award of $1,000 was given to Nadezhda “Hope” Goldfard, a Dyson psychology major, for her ongoing efforts on behalf of individuals affiliated with AHRC.

James Lawler, DPS, conducted workshops on the ongoing community engagement partnership programs between Seidenberg and AHRC New York City at NYSARC’s 60th Anniversary Convention

On October 23, Dr. James Lawler with Darinka Vlahek and Yuliya Khripunkova of AHRC New York City’s Adult Day Care Services, presented workshops on Community Empowerment through Person-centered Planning Presentations: A Project of AHRC New York City and Pace University at the NYSARC 60th Anniversary Convention. NYSARC is the largest nonprofit organization in the state that works for and with developmentally disabled people and their families. This project, undertaken by students in Dr. Lawler’s course in Community Empowerment through Information Systems and Technologies (CIS 102W), was designed to enable individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities by having them create and present person-centered plans for self-development and growth. The plans were created with the assistance of students using multimedia technology and tools. By the end of the fall 2009 semester, nearly 40 students will have helped 40 individuals from five different AHRC facilities across New York City develop personal plans. The program is scheduled to continue in spring 2010 and subsequent semesters until fall 2012.
