On October 23, Dr. James Lawler with Darinka Vlahek and Yuliya Khripunkova of AHRC New York City’s Adult Day Care Services, presented workshops on Community Empowerment through Person-centered Planning Presentations: A Project of AHRC New York City and Pace University at the NYSARC 60th Anniversary Convention. NYSARC is the largest nonprofit organization in the state that works for and with developmentally disabled people and their families. This project, undertaken by students in Dr. Lawler’s course in Community Empowerment through Information Systems and Technologies (CIS 102W), was designed to enable individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities by having them create and present person-centered plans for self-development and growth. The plans were created with the assistance of students using multimedia technology and tools. By the end of the fall 2009 semester, nearly 40 students will have helped 40 individuals from five different AHRC facilities across New York City develop personal plans. The program is scheduled to continue in spring 2010 and subsequent semesters until fall 2012. Dr. Li-Chiou Chen received notification from the NSF in June that her proposal “Collaborative Project: Secure Web Development Teaching Modules” was approved. While Dr. Chen was the principal investigator, Drs. Lixin Tao and Chienting Lin also contributed to the development of the proposal.
The approved project, which will extend over two years, is to be undertaken in collaboration with the City University of New York – City College. The total amount of the award is $149,900 with $99,956 going to Pace as the lead institution.
The funding will be used to support the development of an innovative teaching tool -SWEET (Secure Web Development Teaching) – for undergraduates. SWEET will facilitate the teaching of secure Web development through structured lectures, laboratory exercises, and project modules for building problem-solving skills and by incorporating realistic Web security scenarios from industry.
Christelle Scharff, PhD, became interested in mobile computing while traveling through Cambodia and Senegal where the use of mobile phones has exploded in recent years. People in these countries as well as other developing countries now use mobile phones for commercial, communications and entertainment purposes. What is missing, however, are mobile applications unique to specific locales and markets, particularly ones that promote social change. Christelle Scharff, PhD, participated in the Workshop on Computer Science for Global Development where she delivered a paper on “Mobile Technology for Global Development in Africa: Current and Future Initiatives in Senegal.” The goal of the workshop, which was held in Berkeley, California in August, was to discuss the role of computer science research in addressing the challenges of sustainable global development and to build a community of interested researchers in the field. The Computing Community Consortium, the sponsoring organization, funded her attendance. Stuart Varden, EdD, was recently named a Fellow of the Association of Information Technology Professionals/Education Special Interest Group (AITP/EDSIG). This is the first year that the honor is being conferred and is in recognition of his “sustained, long-term, meaningful and effective support of AITP/EDSIG in its ongoing mission to improve IS education, help IS students, and foster the careers of IS faculty.” The honor will be formally conferred at a special ceremony to be held in Washington, DC in early November.
