Seidenberg Director of Development Deth Sao wins Business Council of Westchester Rising Star award

Our very much loved Director of Development, Deth Sao, will be honored by The Business Council of Westchester on June 21, 2018, at an event celebrating 40 of the most promising young professionals in Westchester County.

In an announcement about the winners, the President and CEO of Business Council of Westchester, Marsha Gordon, wrote: “Each year I am impressed with the quality and diversity of candidates, and this year is no exception. I congratulate the winners who represent a new generation of up and coming professionals in public relations and marketing, education, healthcare, real estate and other fields.”

Deth has been the Director of Development for the Seidenberg School for the past four years, during which she has helped forge excellent relationships with many Pace alumni and prominent business and industry communities. She has successfully organized and run our annual fundraiser, the Leadership and Service in Technology (LST) Awards, and in recent years spearheaded a set of distinctive speaker series that bring expert tech leaders onto campus to share their knowledge with our students.

Regarding her nomination, Deth said “I am honored and humbled to be recognized for this distinction, which is an affirmation of the Seidenberg School’s commitment and continuing success in advancing our STEM mission and students. It is also a privilege to be part of and play a role in the fruitful collaborations among Pace and the business and alumni communities in Westchester.”

We at the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University were delighted by the news, and even more so to find that the nomination for the honor came from Pace’s own Government & Community Relations office.

“Deth is the type of colleague you want to work with and strive to be,” said Bill Colona, Director of Government & Community Relations. “She is hard-working, creative, unflappable, and has unquestionable integrity and character. She is the type of professional we hope our students will become when they graduate.”

The Assistant Vice President for Government & Community Relations, Vanessa Herman, added: “Deth is smart, gracious and an absolute pleasure to work with. She is a tremendous asset to not only Seidenberg but to the University as a whole. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.”

Jonathan Hill, the Dean of the Seidenberg School, praised Deth’s work. “Under Deth’s stewardship, the Seidenberg School has seen notable increases in charitable gifts received, and highly proactive working relationships with the tech industry in the greater New York area, including major corporations and key players in the start-up scene.”

Teens design mobile apps for senior citizens at 2nd annual Mobile App Development Bowl

Friday February 26 was a great day at Pace University as hundreds of high school and college students participated at the second annual Westchester SMART Mobile App Development Bowl.

This year’s kickoff event was bigger than ever, with around 260 contestants from 36 high schools and colleges coming together to design mobile applications for senior citizens.

The challenge was to design an app to help senior citizens deal with a problem they experience in their everyday lives, whether that problem stems from their relationship with technology itself or whether technology can simply be used to solve an unrelated issue.

The event is sponsored by Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino in conjunction with The Seidenberg School.

“The competition showcases the extraordinary talents of our region’s future generation in ways that help benefit our seniors,” said Robert Astorino. “It’s a double win – we’ve created a platform for students to test their technology skills, while our seniors benefit from applications produced by those skills. Last year was a great success, and we’re already building on it this year.”

After an incredible pep rally from The Marching Cobras of Westchester, the teams attended workshops and got to work developing their apps. The resulting apps will be presented to a panel of judges on April 15^th – so if you missed the kickoff, come in April to check out what everybody did!

Seidenberg Dean Jonathan Hill said: “It’s great to celebrate like-minded individuals who bring a contagious enthusiasm for creativity and technology. Everyone at Seidenberg and Pace University alike is proud to support the work being done by these students to help those in need in our community.”

Winners will be announced on April 15^th at the final presentation, which will be held at Pace University’s Pleasantville campus. Cash prizes, paid internships and publishing apps through app stores all on the table.

What do I do?

Compete in a team (two person min) to create a mobile app that will help improve the lives of people aged 65 and above, especially in area where their needs are neglected or underserved. Teams can be affiliated with your high school or college, or you can register as an independent team.

Seidenberg organizes important HPCC conference for this month

Pace University Seidenberg Computer Science (CS) Department at Westchester is organizing the 17^th IEEE HPCC 2015 (IEEE High Performance Computing and Communications) conference that will be held on Aug. 24- 26, 2015 at the Hilton Newark Airport Hotel, NJ. Faculty member Dr. Meikang Qiu from the CS Department at Westchester is its General Chair, and Pace University’s CS-PhD students and faculty will present a dozen of quality papers at IEEE HPCC 2015 or its co-located conferences.

The IEEE HPCC conference is a prominent conference in the world of computing. The conference focuses on providing a platform for scientists and engineers in academia and industry to address the profound challenges in global High Performance Computing (HPC), and present their new experiences and research done in all aspects of HPC, Big Data, cloud computing, and related topics. There will also be eight co-located conferences, symposiums, summits, and workshops, also run as part of IEEE. The co-located events will include the 12^th ICESS (International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems), the 7^th CSS (International Symposium on Cyberspace Safety and Security), BigDataSecurity 2015 (International Symposium on Big Data Security on Cloud), HPSC 2015 (International High Performance and Smart Computing), SmartData 2015 (International Symposium on Smart Data), and the High Performance Big Data Summit (HBD).

IEEE HPCC 2015 aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners who are working on high performance computing and communications from both academia and industry in the world. The conference usually brings in around 400 Computer Science professors and scholars from across the world. Among the dozen of IEEE/ACM fellows delivering the keynotes are Jack Dongarra (top scholar in High Performance Computing, ACM and IEEE Fellow), Sun-Yuan Kung (IEEE Fellow, Princeton University), Xiaodong Wang (IEEE Fellow, Columbia University), Tarek EI-Ghazawi (IEEE Fellow, GWU), Sandeep Shukla (IEEE Fellow, IIT India), and Ruqian Lu (Academician of Chinese Academy of Science). More than ten industrial entrepreneur leaders will deliver important topics about High-performance Big Data (HBD) on the associated summit, including Jim Jeffers (Intel), Long Fei (Google), Stan Posey (NVIDIA), Kevin Johnson (IBM), Greg Clifford (Cray), and Yung-Chin Fang (Dell).

The conference is organized by IEEE HPCC/ICESS/CSS 2015 committees and sponsored by IEEE, IEEE TCSC, IEEE Computer Society, Pace University, and Longxiang High Tech Group. This conference will be a great opportunity for scholars to connect with academics within a harmonious atmosphere filled with enthusiastic, experienced, and successful members of the computing society. The high-quality research papers presented in the conference cover a broad scope of academic research topics in computer science. The research achievements showcased at these conferences include experimental efforts, innovative system designs, novel technology explorations and evaluations, and investigations identifying the weakness in the existing computing and communication technologies.

Salute to Seniors on May 8th

On May 8th, at the Westchester County Center, there will be a Biz Expo for Seniors and Caregivers, hosted by Westchester County departments of: Senior Programs and Services; Parks, Recreation, and Conservation; and Public Works and Transportation. The co-sponsors of the event is the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services.

This Health and Wellness fair is to celebrate the launch of the Telehealth Intervention Programs for Seniors (TIPS). At the event, there will be interactive exhibits for attendees; you can have you vital signs checked and entered into a computer for immediate results and a ‘TIPS Sheet’ that will explain the findings.

The event will also supply information on the other programs offered by the Department of Senior Programs and Services, such as Caregiver Coaching, Care Circles of Westchester, and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. Social workers will also be present to offer the details about other benefits out there and whether or not you could be entitled to receive.

Vital Care Services, a healthcare management solution that is big on telehealth, has been introducing TIPS around Westchester. Seidenberg’s Dr. David Sachs is also Vital Care’s project manager for TIPS. Vital Care describes TIPS as “a group of adults, who live in congregate or community dwelling arrangements, who have their vital signs checked two to three times each week. At each location, two telehealth technicians support kiosks that contain health care equipment that enables up to 50 individuals to check their weight, blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels, as well as permitting the individuals to answer other questions about their health and health benefits. All information is transmitted wirelessly using Bluetooth to an Android Tablet. That tablet transmits the information to HIPAA compliant servers where telehealth nurses analyze it and provide feedback to the patients and/or their primary care physicians. Participants at each telehealth location receive full needs assessments, benefits information and counseling, care planning and educational services to support health improvements.”

The program has had a successful impact in Westchester so far, and everyone involved is looking to expanding to improve the lives of the growing community of seniors and to make up for a lack in clinical resources.
